On Sept. 25th 2005, Jonathan McClure was awarded the highest award in Scouting, the Eagle Scout Award. To achieve this award, he earned 28 merit badges, passed a board of review, held a variety of leadership positions, and completed a two-year service project.
In 2003 Jonathan joined Victor Kubik and visited the site of Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster to film a documentary, and on his visit he met with Dr. Vasyliy Pasechnik and the other doctors and patients at the Chernihev Centre of Medical Social Rehabilitation - Revival Center. Their courage and ability to accomplish so much in such adverse conditions inspired him, and so Jonathan focused his Eagle Scout project on helping them. His project linked the physicians at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis with the children's hospital/rehabilitation center in Ukraine through e-mail and the use of an online translation program; he set up an e-mail pen pal program between the Ukrainian children with school children in the USA, and he also worked with LifeNets to collect medical equipment and supplies that were shipped to Ukraine on two 40-foot containers in 2004 and 2005. Photos can be seen on www.lifenets.org/chernobyl.
Fellow scouts, church members, school children, and community volunteers helped Jonathan with his project, and together they logged over 2000 hours of community service. Jonathan's grandfather Tom Peine, a former scout leader and winner of the silver beaver award for outstanding service to scouting, gave the keynote address at the Court of Honor ceremony. Jonathan attends the Lafayette Indiana congregation with his parents Malcolm and Cathy McClure and his grandparents Tom and Sue Peine.
