Seventeen-year-old Indianapolis teen, Jonathan McClure, will be spending the summer in Valencia Spain to study Spanish with the Indiana University Honors Language Program. Jonathan will leave on June 9th and will live with a host family for seven weeks in a total immersion university program. Jonathan is excited, but a little nervous too, since one of the rules of the intensive program is that he is only allowed to speak in Spanish the entire time he is there. He will be taking classes on the Spanish language, history and culture.
Jonathan McClureWithin days of his arrival in Spain however, he will have to return to the United States for two days to compete in the National History Day competition in Washington DC. Jonathan won first place at the Indiana State competition with his video documentary entitled: "Going Live: The Tony Kiritsis Case Tests Communication Ethics". The documentary covers how the ability to do live satellite transmissions has affected television news and communication ethics. "I know I'm going to be tired from jet lag, but the national level of the competition is a lot of fun. Several thousand students who are history buffs meet at the University of Maryland for the competition, so you get to meet a lot of interesting people," Jonathan said. If you would like to learn more about the National History Day competition, you can visit their website at www.nationalhistoryday.com. After the two days of competition, Jonathan will fly back to Spain.
