UDPATED August 29, 2010

Today's update (August 26) from Marlene on Kyle is great news!

Hi all, heard from Jearod(about 9:30-10:00) and glad to report Kyle was doing great(jearod's words)...  He had a pretty good night sleep and woke up wanting something to eat... Dr came to check on Kyle this morning, Jearod told him Kyle wanted to eat so dr ok for food.. Also he was bugging Jearod and Shannon because he wanted to sit up and go home, watch cartoons with Aubrey and Brady... They still had him on some good pain meds this morning which is to be expected as surgeon had to make hole in his skull to get to the area that needed fixing..  Jearod said his speech and motor skills so far seemed to be same as pre surgery.. Haven't heard from kids since earlier but will let you know as soon as I hear anything new.. Thanks again sooooooo much for helping to get OUR LITTLE GUY through, what we hope will be his last surgery..

Earlier:

Jearod Just called. They are closing Kyle up as we speak. Dr said he was able to find areas he needed to get close them off area. Taking him to radiology, insert dye, make all is done and then hopefully that should be it. Please keep Praying for him to handle the pressure, wounds heal normally.PRAISE GOD FOR THE HOSPITAL, DOCTORS AND MEDICAL STAFF THAT HAS HELPED ALL OF US WATCH THIS MIRICLE UNFOLD.. BLESS YOU ALL FOR YOUR NEVER ENDING THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.

Earlier:

I'm sorry for not getting this out sooner, keeping up with things isn't as easy for me these days! Anyways, last Monday during Kyle's angiogram they discovered that the AVM had grown A LOT since his surgery in June so they proceeded to do more embolization to block off blood flow in veins & arteries that's heading towards the brian - surgery lasted approx. 4 1/2 hours and we stayed in the hospital with him till Wednesday evening.  There's still more work to be done, so we came home for a few days and will be driving back up to LA in the morning to have him checked in @ 6:00 a.m. (Tuesday Aug. 24th)  for an 8:00 surgery.

We ask that you please keep Kyle in your prayers and for him to stay strong and feel peace & comfort from God at all times!!!

Love,

The O'Quinn's

Dear Friends and Family,

Once again our Son Kyle will be going in for another round of surgeries in LA. The first one is Monday May 24th and the second is on Monday June 7th, we ask that you all continue to Pray for Kyle! We are praying for God to guide the surgeons hands! Specifically we are praying for an end to all these surgeries that God will give the Doctor's the wisdom they need to fix these problems and for complete restoration of Kyle's body, mind ,veins, arteries. We ask that you stand strong with us and BELIEVE that our God will see Kyle through this once again!! We thank God for every special moment we share with Kyle, we know that not for the Grace of God our Son would not be here!

We believe Kyle is a miracle and that our Father has huge plans for Kyle. WE pray for peace for Kyle and our family, we pray that the Holy Spirit comforts Kyle while he is going threw this surgery and recovery. We believe because we have seen miracles before with Kyle and we know that Gods love is greater than ours. Thank you all for the Prayers you have all been a huge part of Kyle's LIFE we know that Prayer is powerful, together our voices ring loud!

May 24 after surgery --

Aloha dear friends and family,

Good news. We just received this email from Marlene (Fred's neice - Kyle's grandmother).

Love,

Anne & Fred

Hi All, Just heard from Jearod, Dr just came out told the kids Kyle surgery was finished and that they would let them know when they could go to recovery with him.. Dr said they did get most of what they wanted to get done for next surgery but unfortunately was not able to go through the smaller veins like they had mentioned to this morning(see what Jearod entered on Facebook about 8:00am this morning)posting on Facebook...  Jearod said he would call me after they got to see him and get more info.. Keep up the Prayers as again, HE is listening!!!!

UPDATED March 10, 2010

Kyle is home now and hasn't had much in the way of noticeable side-effects (speech, walking etc) so we were all happy about that..the doctors are getting together (LA, Anaheim and SD drs) to try to figure out next step. After this last surgery(9hrs) doctors said in all their years as surgeons this is the worse case they have seen. If they  decide to do another surgery (not sure yet) it will be the end of April or beginning of May. The kids' faith continues. They know  God has his plan for Kyle and whatever it is they are grateful for ever minute they have had and will have with their son. I will let you know what the doctors decide.

UPDATED March 4, 2010

Kyle just got out of surgery and is doing ok..

March 1

It is 11:30 and we just talked to surgeon - Kyle has another avm that has formed -  they said that it is outside the brain & they think it can be fixed!!! That's the good news. They also found that since they blocked his jugular the last surgery it has caused problems. The blood that it carried now has no where to go and is going back into his brain which is very dangerous as it could cause bleed or stroke.  The surgeon will do what he can today and then bring in others for more opinions. We believe that God will carry us through this as he has every other situation with Kyle! We don't understand why this is happening but we know God is good and this will all work out! We pray for comfort for Kyle and continued guidance in Jesus name! Please keep us in your thoughts and Prayers as we struggle through this.

Thank you bless you all

Jearod Shannon

 UPDATED November 25, 2009

As you can see from his mom's update below, Kyle is back home and the Dec. 15th surgery has been canceled for now. This is all great news. Thank you for keeping Kyle in your prayers. We hope to be able to see him when we go to San Diego in December.

GREAT NEWS to share.... Kyle's home!!! I'm sorry for running a day late.... he was discharged from Kaiser on Friday, we got home late afternoon so things were a little crazy and we were all so excited & exhausted at the same time! After 11 days Kyle, Aubrey & Brady were so happy to see each other, it was cute to see them play & laugh together!!! We also enjoyed a nice dinner together for our anniversary

Friday morning Kyle's surgeon Dr. Levy said after reviewing his CT scan again he's going to hold off on doing another surgery for now, so the one scheduled for Dec. 15th is cancelled.

Thank you for the comments, we love reading them and are thankful for all your prayers for Kyle and our family. He's a strong little boy and we Praise God for him everyday. We are blessed with three beautiful children =)

God Bless you all~

November 14, 2009

Let's keep the Prayers coming because they are working!!!! As of last night Kyle had his 2 drains removed(where shunts were removed) and the doctors were going to slow down the draining of the intercranial shunt in hopes his body will start doing what the shunts have been doing.... Also on another antibiotic... Best news of all Jearod said he had just finished eating some CHICKEN NUGGETS!!! Do you believe it just days after major brain surgery, not to mention removing his jugular, the kid is eating Chicken Nuggets... I would bet the only thing most of us would want to eat is a handful of pain pills....! Thanks so much for all your continues thoughts and prayers. I have no doubt with all your Prayers OUR Little Kyle will breeze through Tues surgery... I wish there were words to explain how very grateful "this granny" is to have all of you as my Partners in Prayer, YOU continue to work miracles....
love, Marlene

UPDATED October 17, 2009

Doctor's just made there rounds and said they will be able to administer his meds through his feeding tube!!! Since Kyle had not used his feeding in MONTHS we consulted with the surgeon about having it removed, and never went through with it....... now it's become a blessing that he still has it in for the medications he needs!!!   T

Hi Everyone!

Kyle, the Surgeons & our Mighty, miracle-working God did AWESOME yesterday!!! Kyle was in surgery from approx. 8:30-3:00 then he was taken to the PICU where they started to wake him up. He was responsive right away and his vitals good. The surgery was a lot more invasive than what they anticipated and a lot of blood was lost, he required two units of blood to be replaced. They drilled holes, clamped a main artery & glued smaller veins & arteries to stop the blood flow in the mass that was causing pressure on the brain - work was done inner & outer cranial.  He was breathing on his own over the ventilator so the breathing tube was removed by 7:30 p.m. and he was also taken off oxygen! Then later in the night his catheter was removed. RIGHT NOW our specific prayer for Kyle is that there able to find a new vein to run his IV through since his current ones have blown - unfortunately  this is common with him, and it's very hard to find his veins :( Since he still has a feeding tube he can be fed through that, but he still needs is medications so an IV is necessary!!! Poor baby boy has a new HUGE Incision, but that's o.k. he just needs time to heal. We are so relieved that this major surgery is over! Also, please pray that his body adjust to these necessary revisions that have been made! His body is going through a lot to reroute the blood flow, but God is Good and will be with him always!!! We pray for Kyle to have peace, comfort, a speedy recovery & complete healing. Hard to believe he's gone through two surgeries in four days!  Thank you all for your prayers, Kyle still needs them.......... don't stop now!!!   PRAYER IS POWERFUL!!!

With lot's of Love,

UPDATED January 9, 2009

Hi Vic and Bev,

I received this recent update on Kyle from Fred's niece (Kyle's grandmother). He still needs prayer for continued recovery but it looks like things are going in a positive direction. We are very thankful. His new brother and sister arrived and are doing well. This young family certainly has a lot to deal with and are handling it very well. Jearod (Kyle's dad) is at home from work taking care of him and mom is busy with the new twins!

Warmest Aloha,
Anne and Fred

Kyle got to come home from the hospital. So far all seem to be adjusting pretty well.... Each day Kyle takes another baby step(not literally) w/regards to his movements, laughing, etc.... He is doing pretty well moving his arms to specific positions like pointing, touching baby brother or sister when they are laying in bed w/him, turning his head from side to side... Still doesn't have much going on with his leg movements.... He does move them around some but doesn't have the ability to stand or crawl around yet.... Isn't able to talk either but we all have faith that someday that will come back.

UPDATED November 30, 2008

Kyle had another surgery and we just got this positive update earlier today, November 26th. Thanks to everyone who is keeping this sweet little two year old boy in their prayers.

Hi All, (November 28)

Here is a little update on Kyle... He is doing a little better each day as far as his movements go.... Today when the occupational therapist was working with him she was moving his arms and hands around touching his nose, ears etc... Well a couple of times she held his arm up so his hand was close to his face and she asked him to touch his eye with his fingers and he did it... Also did it with his ears.... He also laughed(some what) for the first time today..... Keep the prayers coming as they are working.... A Dr came in today just after Kyles work out and the therapist told him what Kyle had done.... He had come to give the results of the CT Scan that they had done this morning(which was a little disappointing as drs were hoping for a little less fluid on the brain this time) but said that it was obvious that what the scans show makes no difference because of the improvement that Kyle has been making against all odds.... They just can't explain it but we can..... It's called faith....

Love, Mar

Kyle's surgery went very well!! He was much more alert today, and hardly had any medicine. He is staying awake alot more and really trying to talk. He had a CT scan yesterday, to make sure the shunts were in the right place, and it showed that they are.
Kyle is healing more and more everyday!! It is so exciting to see the miracle taking place in front of our eyes!

Subject: URGENT!!!!! Prayer Request for Kyle

Just to give you all an update on sweet Kyle.....

*He went in for surgery yesterday, checked in @ 6:30 am and his surgery ended up lasting close to 9 hours!! The surgery went well, there was a mishap in post-op, when he stopped breathing for a short time-good part is he was still hooked up to monitors and the oxygen was close enough to fix the problem fast!!

*Kyle was doing great-talking, smiling, having popsicles,etc-then he stopped breathing again last night @ about 10:30pm. This time he was checked into his room and the oxygen wasn't as close. The nurse was getting the oxygen out and Jearod pressed the emergency button to get things moving!! They had to breathe for him and decided to transport him to Childrens Hospital. The team from Childrens came and he and Jearod were transported to childrens at about 11:45pm by ambulance. His wonderful Doctor from Kaiser was called and met them at Childrens. They immediately took him in for a scan of the brain to see what was happening and found there was fluid on his brain-which they were warned could be a possible side effect, so we were all worried but also knew this was a possibility. They put a drain and shunt in his head to drain the fluid and that went well.

*Next his doctor came out and said there was also bleeding in his brain-this was a shock!! One of the veins was bleeding and this had to be stopped before anything else!! Now, we all stood and held hands while Kyles doctor prayed for a miracle and the strength to help Kyle-he had already been in surgery for 9 hours!!

*The doctor that was on call, then came in and explained a few things and reminded us all that Kyle was "very sick" and this surgery that they would do would be very risky!! The prayers needed to keep coming in!! There was talk of all the horrible things that could happen during surgery, including possibly not coming out of the surgery! This doctor, Kyles doctor (Dr. Levy) and another doctor from Childrens named Dr. Levy (pronounced Levvy), who was at home, were all discussing what the procedure would entail. It was decided that Dr. Levy from Childrens would come in and perform the surgery-he was not on call, but came in anyway!! Kyles doctor doesn't have rights at Childrens to be hands on, but he was in the room and said this surgeon was amazing-heroic!! The surgery was supposed to be about 2 hours-they came out at about 3 hours and said he was done-still not awake but he made it through the surgery! What a blessing!!

*He is hooked up to many monitors and doesn't "look" like himself. He was still pretty swollen from all the "stuff" in his body over the past 27 hours, but Jearod said that the swelling has gone down a little, and as of about 7pm tonight, his color was coming back!! He is still on a ventilator to help him breathe-but he is breathing above the vent, which is a great sign!! He was showing signs of waking up earlier today-his eyes were moving under his lids, the nurses were doing deep pressure points and he was responding, they pulled some tape off of his shoulder and he definitely felt it and moved!! Praise God!!

*Sweet Kyle is definitely not out of the clear completely-but things are happening in a very positive way!! His nurses are VERY optimistic, and only time will tell. They are anxious for him to wake up and see what happens, as far as his functioning, how he reacts to all the tubes, etc!! He is a fighter-a tough little guy, who is NOT giving up!! Please pray for his continued healing, strength and continued faith for Jearod and Shannon, and family. Pray for his nurses and doctors, that they will continue to provide Kyle with the best care possible-they have truly been amazing!!

*For what is going on-he is where he needs to be!! All the staff has been very accomodating to all of us, and very concerned for Shannon, Jearod, the twins and of course Kyle!! Jearod and Shannon are very appreciative of all the calls, text messages, prayers,etc-they just ask that you all keep praying!! With God, all things are possible!

*Whoever called the church and shared about Kyle-Thank you!! A guy named Mark from the Rock, came and prayed over the family this afternoon, and said he will put Kyle on the prayer chain at Church and share about Kyle with other ministries too!! My brother Jon also came and prayed with us today-it was great. He shared
Isaiah 58:8-9.

"Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you: The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, 'Here I am'"

Continue to pray for a speedy, successful full recovery of Kyles little body!! He is expected to be at Childrens Emergency for awhile, possibly 2-3 weeks, give or take. He is on the third floor-just check in down stairs and they will give you a visitor sticker and tell you where to go. The family will most likely be in the waiting room to the left of the Critical care North unit!

Thanks so much- you all are making this terrifying situation a little easier for them and they really appreciate it!! Love, Ally

(*for those that don't know Kyle-he is the sweetes little guy! He is 2 1/2 years old and is an amazing little boy!! His mother Shannon is 7 1/2 months pregnant with twins.)
