Updated February 15, 2010

Here is an update from Robin and Arline from late last evening about Sarah:

Today, Sunday, February 7 -- Sarah has had a setback in leaving the hospital

• Her airway is congested and her breathing has a "rattle" in it
• Oxygenation dropped to 83% -- so they put an oxygen mask on her which brought it back up to 93% (we would like 98% or better)
• Blood pressure is up to 144 / 80 with 135 pulse rate -- normally Sarah is 115 / 80 with 74 pulse
• Stopped albuterol treatments on airway -- as this can raise blood pressure even further with potentially bad results
• Blood sodium is at 145 -- the top of the normal range -- one more point higher would put her out of normal
• She had a 101 temperature this morning, but this evening that is gone
• Doctors are administering general anti-biotic
We were expecting to move Sarah to her next placement in the upcoming week and hopefully begin a more aggressive Physical / Occupational and Speech / Swallow therapy. Please pray that this setback will be short-lived and that Sarah can resume the road to recovery.

Updated September 3, 2009

Sarah Connelly, daughter of Robin and Arline of Pasadena, CA suffers the long-term effect of whole head radiation used in 1986 to "kill" a mid-brain tumor that left her with almost no sight, and almost no pituitary function. Currently Sarah struggles to stand and to walk -- since "voids" in her brain created by the radiation are filled in with calcium deposits -- interrupting her motor nerve system. In addition, there is what the doctors call disinhibition -- which gives rise to inappropriate behavior, language, and moodiness.

Sarah is the daughter of Robin and Arlene Connelly.  As of 2:00 PM today, Thursday, June 11, Sarah was taken to the Emergency Room at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. Her symptoms were similar to the other recent hospitalizations -- blood in vomit and extreme weakness of limbs -- signs of an electrolyte imbalance. We have been administering replacement hormones since her diagnosis with a mid-brain tumor in 1985 (almost 24 years ago!) One of those replacement hormones controls the fluid level in the body -- and thereby controls the concentration of electrolytes. We have been earnestly trying to monitor her and administer the correct dosages -- but something has been going desperately wrong recently -- we don't know what it is, but do ask for your prayers for a resolution to this latest problem in what has been a quarter century of dealing with multiple health issues with Sarah.
