Helping Out Distressed Coons Friday, May 23, 2008

After arriving home from more than a week in Cincinnati for the General Conference of Elders and Council of Elders meetings, we were met with the squeaky voices of baby raccoons in a window well over the basement.  They were trapped.  The mother was also there, but she was dead.  The babies were trying to nurse from her.  They were hungry and dehydrated and had probably been in the window well the entire time we were gone to Cincinnati.

What to do?  We found a woman by the name of Pam on the east side of Indianapolis who nurses raccoons back to health and lets them be released in the wild.  We understood that she is about the only one in the area who does that.

We caught the baby coons with a fish net and put them into boxes and into our van.  One of the boxes tipped and the baby scurried out and hid itself in the van.  We had to remove the seats to find it.  It took about 20 minutes, but found it just above my brake pedal.  I took heavy gloves and wrestled the little rascal back into the box.

Well, today is preparation for the Sabbath, but it turned out to be a ministry to coons.  Here are some photos of the little guys.
