They Are Green Herons!

Final Update July 4, 2011

The Green Herons that were born  and grew to flying age outside my office window at home were truly an enjoyable experience as we watched and photographed them. We were able to see them every day for two weeks upon discovery.  Below are the last set of photos which includes the babies out of tree and roaming through our neighborhood.  Also, a few rare shots of the mother who was extra elusive as she quickly darted in only to feed the chicks.

On my Facebook Page I received several comments from you about the mysterious birds. They were identified as GREEN HERONS.  Checking into a bird book, this was definitely a match.  I thank everyone for their help.  Here are the comments I received.

Photos taken June 13 and 14th

Master Bird Watchers

·          DeAnna Love Yep! Looks like heron to me too.

·          Mitzi Koons Great photos! I'd say Heron's, too

·          Charles Washburn looks like Herons to me.

·          Stephanie D Smith Neat!

·          Lisa Williams I would guess heron also. Maybe green heron? They will grow up to be lovely adults. Herons are on the shy side.

·          Susan Durnil They look like heron to me, too. . . but aren't heron shore birds? Is there a pond behind your house, Vic?

·          Victor Kubik Thanks for all the input. Yes, we have ponds all over. We live by golf course with all kinds of birds.  Heron makes sense.

·         Joy Wagner these are baby birds are called "Least Bittern" birds I looked it up in the computer in google.com

·          Christine Capehart Miller Most definitely a Heron.

·          Darla Moody I declare!! Mangy buzzards?! :D

·          Patricia Nelson gray heron - we have them - near a rookery on the lake

·          Lorelei Whiting Nettles I was going to say egret, so I guess I was close. :)

·          Darlene White Shoemaker They look like buzzards to me·

·          Oleh Kubik Looks like Donald and Daisy! Maybe Daffy. Seriously I also think Heron.

·          Jeanene Miller I am going to say Blue Heron.

·          Scott Hoefker I would say possibly the pre adolescent stage of the Ardea cinerea...

·          Oleh Kubik No way on the buzzard.

·          Sue Francis Larison They don't look like Great Blue Herons, buzzards or Least Bittern, but more like a Green

·          Heron. I am going to say Green Heron.

·          Jeanene Miller I've never seen a green heron, they must be pretty. But definitely not a buzzard. I see a lot of blue ones around here. This would be an interesting thing, to watch them grow up right outside your window.

·          Cherie Zahora Ken saw the mama fly away from the nest; he says green heron, too.

·          Virgina Mills Reyes They look like heron.

June 11, 2011

These birds appeared outside my office window on June 10, 2011. They are HUGE chicks.  They are a little ugly, but lovable.  The nest that the three chicks are in is small and appears very shaky, but the chicks to wander from the nest and walk all over the tree.  The mother is skittish and swoops in quickly every so often to feed them. Then, she's gone.  Could you please help me identify these interesting birds?  Please write to
