From Larry and Vicki Scher, Columbia, Missouri
From Larry:
Regarding fragrances, I am not as sensitive to fragrances at church as some others are when used sparingly. My problems begin when I am visiting church members who have scented candles burning or who use Glade Room Deodorant Spray or Plug-Ins. I immediately begin coughing and sneezing, and my throat begins to close. It is extremely difficult to breathe. I have had to prematurely end the visit. When I move to a new area, I let everyone know about my sensitivities to help avoid offending anyone.
From Vicki:
I am sensitive to fragrances--even when worn in moderation in close quarters--like choir practice or small-room gatherings. My eyes begin running as though I am crying and do not stop. I also experience shortness of breath and a very scratchy throat. If the fragrance is strong, I will begin coughing.
I know both men and women enjoy wearing fragrances. I do too!! I have found that I can wear completely natural perfumes made from essential oils--or very, very expensive perfumes, usually from Paris or other parts of Europe, that do not contain alcohol, chemically manufactured fragrances, or food colorings. These do not offend or cause symptoms for me or others around me that would normally experience allergic reactions. Unfortunately, all fragrances purchased in drug stores or even some of the better department stores seem to cause allergic reactions in others.
